Free Games

11/9/06

This was the first day of library support for National Games week.  Brent, James, Dave, Charlie, and Ted went to the St. Albans library.  We were joined later by James' family and got a new gamer Nicolas.  Nicolas is a miniature guy by trade and had attended CharCon.  Two others showed up to inquire, but did not play a game with us.  Also, the library branch manager joined us for a quick game and Charlie (from the library) sat in briefly.

Since Nicolas was new, we let him pick.

Cosmic Cows
Waiting for people to arrive at the house, James and I took on this latest prize table pick.  I think this one is cute for a dice rolling game.  Apparently James' tractor beam was stronger than mine as he got his three cows into his space ship faster than I did.

Tsuro
We played this one with 7 which is not really an idea number.  People went out exactly in turn order leaving James, the last player, to win the game.  But, quick and easy intro to gaming.

King Me
We were six for this one as we vied for the favor of the king...ok so it was not Louis IV....it sounded good.  I took the lead in the first two rounds.  The final round was a blood bath!  At one point I thought the last guy on the board would have to be king because everyone else was dead.  Luckily I managed to hang on for the win in the end with 4 of my final characters dead.

10 days in the USA
James jumped into this one with his daughter while we taught Nicolas Carcassone Hunters and Gatherers.

Hunters and Gatherers
I bowed out of this one as we had some interest from a couple of people dropping in.  I understand Dave won by one point in the end.

Blokus
We got in a four player game of Blokus while the Carcassone game was still going.  James managed the win.

Pickamino
For a quick wrap up we decided to BBQ some worms.  James' strategy of rolling a lot of worms and 5s paid off in the end.

At this point it was time to adjourn from the library and move back to the house for some more gaming.

Ysaphan
Wow, this game played differently from all of my other games.  I finally saw the use of the caravan track.  Thank you to someone on the net who explained to me.  Now I do think the game really works the way it was written.  This is a really nice light romp game.  James proved victorious again.....it must be James' night.

Anno 1503
I recently got this in a math trade.  It is a four player solitaire race game with a definite settlers feel and look.  Roll for resources, build and explore.  This game proved very close.  Dave pulled of the victory.  Had he not won, James would have won and I also could have won on the same turn.  Charlie got decimated by pirates and fires, unfortunately.  I will say it also works well with 2 players much like the settlers card game and starship catan.

Pueblo
One of my favorite 3d mindless fun games.  Of course those that have ever had me explain the rules know that the theme is about a deviant peeping tom Indian running around trying to peek into windows.  The game started out weird.  Dave and I built on one side and Charlie and James on the other.  So, for a while it was two against two telling the peeping Tom the best spots to check out the babes.  Over time that changed of course as the pueblos got higher and higher.  I proved victorious in hiding my harem from that evil doer, for the victory.

What a great day of gaming.  The library was very supportive and invited us back for another event anytime.  Also, thanks to the WVAG group for being so supportive of the hobby!  Next library on Saturday in Dunbar.
